Protecting your eyes from Macular Degeneration Recent studies
show the benefits of diet (particularly carotenoids and omega-3)
in the prevention or delay of onset of Macular Degeneration. In
addition, a healthy lifestyle free of tobacco and obesity will
work as a deterent. Remember, children of parents with AMD are
at a higher risk for developing the condition.
Sunlight (UV) damages the retina. Please wear
sun protection outdoors whenever possible. 100% UV protection is
a must. Kids are most susceptable. Hats and sunwear are very
recommmended.
Carotenoids such a lutein and zeaxathin are
strong antioxidants that accumulate in the retina and filter
damaging blue light.
Foods containing these carotenoids include
leafy greens (ie spinach and kale) and red vegetables and
colorful fruits and berries and eggs.
Omega-3 has also been shown to reduce the risk
of AMD by regulating inflammation. Sources include cold water
fish, flaxseed, and various oils.
Vitamin supplements are recommended for those
who don’t consume enough of the above food groups.
Smokers are asked to steer clear of beta
carotene (vitamin A). Quiting smoking will decrease your risk by
30%.
